History:

Chula Vista is the last City in Southern California and lies next to Tijuana just over the Mexican border. The climate is considered to be one of the most ideal in the world, enjoying like San Diego daily average temperatures in the mid seventies (about 23 degrees Celsius) . Perfect for a great lifestyle but also for preserving classic American muscle cars.

Most months we spend a few days in this area of California looking for Mustangs. Because Chula Vista is so far south, it seems other buyers are less willing to make the long journey down the I5 from Los Angeles. This means we find rich pickings down on the Tijuana Taxi.

Advertised locally, we arranged to view his absolutely beautiful, very early production Mustang automatic coupe on a gorgeous Chula Vista morning in February.

The car was parked outside a large and superbly run speed shop owned by Carlos Vargas, who turned out to be a truly lovely guy.

He told us the Mustang was “one of his babies”  and that he’d spent the last year bringing the little pony up to the stunning condition you can see now.

As paint jobs go, this one is as good as it gets – and we have high standards! The photos Carlos showed us reveal the level of restoration care taken; all panels were painted individually, to the most exacting standards.

Carlos replaced all the glass, external brightwork and chrome before re-trimming the whole interior and adding a leather-bound steering wheel, which happily complements the bigger alloy rims and lower profile tyres.

While this Mustang is unusual as a very early V8 F Code, it now greets the world as a superbly sorted and incredibly attractive little muscle car. Despite its pretty new identity and modern touches, it manages retains its oh-so desirable classic Mustang good looks.
