This is a magnificent fully restored original 1966 A code 225hp 4 venturi V8 Mustang Fastback. It has been restored to a very high standard throughout into this stunning reflection of the world-famous Shelby Hertz rent a Racer. Original Hertz Mustangs are now hundreds of thousands of pounds if you can find one! This highly detailed clone has been substantially upgraded.

The Mustang was built in Fords Metuchen plant in New Jersey in 1966 and came off the line on October 15th. It was then shipped to Kentucky and sold through one of the Ford main dealers in Louisville. It spent its whole life locally and was eventually purchased from Nashville Tennessee which is a state just south of Kentucky by our client Michael then shipped across the pond back to the U.K.

This Mustang comes to us from Michael who is local to us, who purchased the car in 2017. He had owned an original Shelby GT 350 in his mid-twenties when he lived in the States. As he described “what a magnificent car and great fun was had! ” He had hankered after another for many years and once he saw this Hertz 350 Mustang advertised, he decided it had to be bought.

After the Mustang arrived Michael decided that he wasn’t happy with the performance, so he had the engine completely rebuilt and bored and stroked from 289 to 348. As you can imagine he now had ample power. Performance camshaft replaced the standard one. A five-speed gearbox and competition clutch were also fitted, giving it a far better ride and mpg! New Holly four-barrel carburettor was also installed. Also, under the bonnet are Shelby correct pieces like the brace bar, Cobra rocker covers and badging.

The bodywork is also superb and has the addition of operational Shelby side scoops, bonnet pins and bonnet air scoop. The correct rear vent deletes and windows added. The car is set up with period-correct American Torque Thrust wheels with Goodrich tyres.

The interior is also in excellent condition, seats are firm and unmarked. Original wood-grained Shelby steering wheel and five round gauge panel can be found along with Mr Carroll Shelby’s original autograph. Date correct vintage push-button radio which is a modern replica works well. Correct rev counter and period lap racing safety belts add to the exact detail along with the white 5-speed gear knob.

The front suspension has been upgraded to Ron Morris adjustable and large Baer slotted and vented front discs brakes are present.

To top this car of the number plate “SHM 66D” is dedicated to Shelby Hertz Mustang and 66 is 1966 when it was born.

Why has Michael decided to sell it after all his hard work? And only 562 miles since the full engine rebuild and import, one may ask. He has told me that at his increasing age due to some previous arm and leg injuries it is making it increasingly difficult for him to drive and his wife has been asking for something more “sedate” to enjoy, the decision has regretfully been made. Michael has been a gentlemen racer since the early sixties, and he has enjoyed reliving those times in this formidable Mustang maybe it’s your turn to have that fun and be the new custodian of this Black Beauty.

The car is currently going through our Mustang workshop as it has been laid up for a few months but can be viewed at our factory at any time.
