The 69-70 Mustang Sportsroofs are fast becoming recognised as possibly the best-looking Mustangs ever produced and accordingly are becoming very sought after. This is a view held by many, but others will of course favour the earlier cars, which are undoubtedly very beautiful.
The 70 models feature a redesigned front end from the 69 with single headlights moved slightly in board and distinctive wing mounted indicators. The body shell of this series was almost 4 inches longer than its predecessors and overall, the cars have a more “Muscular” appearance, a little more space inside, and the cars look absolutely correct from every angle.
Ford made the Mach 1 available with the more powerful Cleveland engines from 1970 and with two types of cylinder heads 2 & 4V, the latter with closed chamber heads and a four-barrel carburettor, was the more powerful and buyers had the choice of the beefier FMX transmissions which were rated for more horsepower than the original C6.
We found this gorgeous example advertised by the last owner of 12 years,” PJ”, as he liked to be known, told us he had looked at many examples before settling on this car as its condition was outstanding and the mileage was believed to be correct at 70,400 miles.
The M Code V8 engine is original to the car, the FMX transmission was rebuilt in 2011 with a mild shift kit and PJ commissioned a full repaint of the car in 2011 in its original colour Medium Metallic Blue and the finish is beautiful. At the same time the bumpers and bright work were restored or replaced, and the interior was restored in 2012 along with a suspension rebuild using Grab-a-Trac components which greatly enhance the handling characteristics.
Other major upgrades include a Streetmaster 2500 Stall Torque Converter, 3.89 Traction Lock Differential, Edelbrock RPM Air Gap Inlet Manifold, Holley 600CFM Four Barrel Carburettor with Vacuum Secondaries, Comp Cams 280H Camshaft Kit, new Timing Chain and Gears, Manley Valves, New Fulcrum Rockers, Competition Push Rods, New Water Pump, Petronix Electronic Distributor Upgrade, New Harmonic Balancer, New High Torque Starter Motor, New Headers and Exhaust System. As PJ stated “This engine runs really strong, but it spends most of its time in the garage, it runs and drives great, but it is time to let someone else have some fun!”
