It doesn’t come much better than this. For the first time in our business, we were able to purchase directly from the first owner a Classic Mustang. Mrs Melton 96 years young only decided to sell the Mustang as her Granddaughter needed a deposit for her first property. Her relationship was not great at first, with the Mustang. As she happily recalled sending her late husband Aubrey, out to buy the new V.W. With $3500. He returned a few hours later with a Mustang! He said that “he could not help buying it” he had wondered into Gastel Ford’s showroom in Merced California, and it was sitting in the showroom looking like it does now, that must have been an easy sale. Evidently, she didn’t speak to him for some time after.
Who could blame Aubrey? there sat a stunning new model 1967 A code Ford Mustang Notchback. Being an A code, it had the larger 225 BHP as it had the four-barrel carburettor option. Under the showroom lights in 1967 the Clearwater Aqua paint with the contrasting Aqua vinyl seats, must have been stunning. Fitted with many of the extras including Automatic Cruisomatic gearbox, power steering, centre console, tinted glass, deluxe seatbelts and white band tires!
When we received the call from Mrs Melton’s granddaughter to our office in Arizona, we were delighted to go to her house in Atwater, California for inspection. We were amazed at the originality of the Mustang; the Aqua paint had faded in the constant sunshine, but the car had no corrosion and overall, it was an outstanding find. She described how the Family took all their holidays in the Mustang, and it had travelled to many of the great American sights, Grand Canyon, Las- Vegas, San Francisco, Yellowstone national park and many more. She was proud to say that it had never had an accident other than a few small scratches in its time. This was a no brainer, and a purchase was immediately made. So, the Mustang left for Long Beach California and then the journey back to the port of Southampton in the U.K.
Once we had the Mustang back at our Factory, we all agreed that a full nut and bolt restoration, was the way forward with this gem we had found. This has taken us 18 months to complete. Our only objective was to bring it back to its former original glory and that it would be the same as when it left the Factory back in February 1967.The only difference is that we took the smog emissions off. We would humbly suggest that this is one if not the most original Mustang in the U.K. This is a Mustang of museum quality but still usable for shows and classic car gatherings. You may have to build a shelf in your garage for the Cups and Plaques you will no doubt win!
Rather than describe everything we have restored here, a casual glance at the video will explain the depth and detail we have gone to. Along with the body being completely restored the engine, suspension, undercarriage, etc were also attended too.. The seats are original, but we had to change the carpets as Mrs Melton had put over mats on the carpets which had teeth on and unfortunately had rucked all the original carpet up.
The paperwork with this Mustang is also outstanding. With the original invoice from Gastel Ford, original Handbook, all correspondence with Gastel Ford. The original warranty cards, bills, and servicing receipts. We have also a Mart report (birth certificate) for the Mustang which confirms everything we have already stated.
If you are looking for something very special and practically a new 67 Mustang Coupe with great specification and provenance, this one-off opportunity may be the Mustang for you. A great Muscle car to add to any collection.
