Most of us are too young to remember the immediate post war period, but we have all watched British movies of the time, many set in smog filled London streets with everyone in hats and raincoats. Think of the cars of the day, almost all black, with pre war styling, long running boards and very similar lines.
Now imagine the reaction in 1948 to the new Jaguar XK120 at the London Motor Show when it was shown for the first time. The reaction was quite sensational, and the decision was made by Jaguar’s founder and senior designer, Sir William Lyons, to immediately put the car into production.
The first cars were built with all aluminium bodies over ash frames, but this construction was soon superseded by the all steel production cars. The Roadster was soon followed by the Fixed & Drop Head Coupe’s.
At the time, the XK120 Roadster was the worlds fastest production car with a top speed, reflected in its name, of 120 mph which was quite incredible back in 1948. Today these cars have become highly prized by collectors and really good examples commanding well over £100K.
The Nostalgia recreation of Sir William Lyons beautifully sleek and curvaceous body is, to all but the most educated eye, an exact replica. The dimensions are in fact identical but where the original steel Jaguars were notorious for the dreaded “Tin Worm”, being entirely made from fibre glass, the old problems will never become an issue.
All the running gear is from a 3.6 Jaguar XJS with all components prepared to the highest standards for this build, presenting a car that has absolutely all the appeal and sensational styling of the original car but with the driving characteristics of a modern sports car.
Having owned and driven original XK Jaguars and enjoyed them very much we can’t emphasis just how much better the Nostalgia 120 handles, steers, brakes and accelerates. This is also due to the exacting standards that have been engaged by its fastidious builder Colin.
So, if you like the idea of owning a truly beautiful Classic Jaguar, but don’t want to engage in the level of maintenance and upkeep required, then this might be the car for you.
