The old saying “Better be born lucky than rich” certainly applied on this occasion as we were actually on the trail of a particularly nice 67 Mustang Convertible in Redondo Beach California,
when a beautiful genuine 427 Shelby Cobra pulled up at the storage unit we were visiting.
The driver, Christian was a very charming and equally enthusiastic “Petrol Head” who shared the same unit and immediately started chatting about the 67 Mustang we had agreed to buy, and that was now parked outside.
He told us about his collection of cars and how he had recently acquired the Shelby and then threw into the mix that his friend John had a very early production 64 ½ Mustang Convertible that was going to be for sale shortly.
We exchanged numbers and he promised to ask John to get in touch. He was as good as his word as later that day we were inside John’s “Man Cave” viewing his beautifully restored and very early production Mustang Convertible.

John explained he had bought and restored the car as a gift for his wife nearly 20 years earlier but the car was so perfect, and the paintwork so good that Linda wouldn’t drive it! So it was only used when the couple would enjoy taking runs out to car shows and the occasional vacation with John at the wheel.
So in between monthly runs to keep the car exercised, the car remained in John’s garage where he enjoyed simply looking at it whilst enjoying a beer or two in front of “The Game”.

The “D” Coding in the vin number denotes the very early build date of this Convertible and quite correctly the original V8 Motor still has the original Generator in place. However this component, very cleverly, has an alternator built into its casing to provide much more reliable electrical operation and charging.
We have the original Rocker Covers and Air Filter Housing for the car in the correct Gold paint finish which were only found on the early production cars whose engines were always painted black.

The specification is very high on this Classic Mustang Convertible with Power Steering and Power Disc Brakes allowing for effortless driving pleasure with automatic gear changes and, at the flick of a switch, the White Soft Top will be lowered for that unmatchable open air Mustang experience.

The body and paint finish on this beautiful car are right up there with the very best, the custom orange stitching to the seats add a unique but very tasteful addition and the GT style Fog Lights and Exhaust Tips add a sporting hint.
Cragar are a very long established wheel manufacturer and their Chrome SS Five Spoke rims are often seen on Muscle Cars of this period, but the wheels on this Mustang Convertible we have never seen before, they finish the appearance of this example perfectly, and John said he knew they were absolutely the right choice.

The internal finish of the boot area is really nice and what is believed to be the original spare wheel and tyre, or should we say tire, along with the correct Jack and tools are all present. Under the bonnet things look very nice, a recent brake overhaul has been carried out and new shocks all round give a very comfortable smooth ride, …….just how it should be.
