New Record – 1968 Ford Mustang Sells For $3.85 Million

Last year, the title of World’s Most Expensive Mustang belonged to Steve McQueen’s original Mustang used in the film Bullitt. The car was sold at Mecum auctions for $3.4 million.

However, the crown belongs to the new girl in town. The very first prototype in a line of competitive cars, and the first 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R to win a race, set a new record by selling for $3.85 million.

Privately owned by a collector prior to being sold, this example of the notorious “Flying Mustang” glided across the red carpet of the muscle car world gleaming from a full restoration. Happily, its 1968 GT350R looks were well preserved.

The 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R sold for a record $3.85 million.

Mecum auctions, based in Indianapolis, reported that the highest bid reached $3.5 million, while the total price including taxes and fees amounted to $3.85 million. This makes it officially the most expensive Mustang in the world.

This is not the Shelby’s first brush with fame. British sports car racing engineer and driver Ken Miles, famous for racing on American teams and an inductee to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, famously won driving this very car. The history behind the 1965 GT350R and Ken Miles is highlighted in the 2019 film Ford V.S. Ferrari, which was nominated four times for the Oscar earlier in the year.

Perhaps most interestingly of all, the winning bidder has not been identified. However, we think it’s safe to say it is going to a careful and experienced owner who values the historic importance of classic muscle cars.
